🚨 Brazoria County Deputy Shooting 🚨 A fatal deputy-involved shooting in Brazoria County is now under investigation. according to reports the Deputy involved has been a Peace Officer since July 2023 and has only been employed at BCSO According to the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle shortly before midnight on June 1. The vehicle reportedly fled, and the pursuit ended at a residence in Lake Jackson. During the encounter, 18-year-old John Gabriel Mendoza Jr. was shot by the deputy. Mendoza was transported to a hospital, where he later died. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave, and the Texas Rangers, along with the Brazoria County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, are conducting independent investigations. Attorneys representing Mendoza’s family have stated that he and his friends were unarmed and were returning home after playing basketball. The family is demanding the release of body camera footage and answers regarding what occurred inside the garage where the shooting took place. At this time, many critical questions remain unanswered: • What was the original reason for the traffic stop? • What happened between the end of the pursuit and the shooting? • What do body cameras, dash cameras, and dispatch recordings show? • Was anyone armed? • Did the deputy act within department policy? As with any officer-involved shooting, the facts matter more than rumors. The public deserves a complete, transparent investigation and the release of evidence as soon as legally possible. We’ll continue following this case as more information becomes available.
