I don’t know any more about this situation than is presented here. However, it resonated with me because I have had SEVERAL “good” (for lack of a better term) cops tell me their “associations” don’t have their back. I *do have a question. If you’re “protecting and serving” why do you need an “association” to attack your critics? 🤷After more than three decades as a member of TMPA(Texas Municipal Police Officers Association), I have decided to terminate my membership and requested removal from all associated databases. This decision stems from the organization’s social media representative’s handling of their platform. I have witnessed this individual engage in disparaging remarks towards citizens, exploit personal photos from their pages, and exhibit unprofessional behavior towards the community we serve. (Screen shots attached) Despite criticism, TMPA’s leadership has failed to address these issues, leading me to infer that they either condone or disregard such behavior. Consequently, this does not align with my values as a retired Texas Peace Officer. Kevin Lawrence Tyler Owen from TMPA called me. I suspect it was due to him getting multiple phone calls from all over the Houston area asking what the heck was going on. While I still don’t agree with Tyler about it being acceptable to go after citizens in a professional organizations feed, I give him credit for calling. He said he would take my concerns under advisement for future comments. I will say I think he is off the mark when he mistakenly equates personally attacking people who comment negatively with getting the facts around a members critical incident out. They are Very different things and you can do one without the other and when you do, it’s a professional look. Not something that looks like a teenager posts.
